Stakeholders

The legislation surrounding performance enhancing drugs and gene research affect many people. First and foremost are the athletes. Many athletes have an invested interest in perusing any avenue of athletic advancement. After dedicating years of time and energy, athletes who are willing to assume the risks may feel entitled to any advantage steroid have to offer. Conversely, athletes who are dedicated to natural development have a huge stake in maintaining a fair, level playing field by diminishing steroid use.

The next group consists of sports organizations that must create and enforce guidelines on steroid use. These groups are responsible for maintaining the spirit of competition and fairness between athletes. And the added economic investments of these organizations demand that the opinions of the fans will ultimately dictate how far drug use and gene alteration will be allowed to take place.

The final stakeholders are the fans - especially the young fans and their parents. The next generation of athletes are very aware of what their heroes are doing and it becomes the parents' responsibility to deal with these influences. When athletes are allowed to manipulate their bodies with drugs and gene therapy, young people will naturally follow and parents will be challenged to reinforce healthy morals and help kids maintain perspective and priorities.
